PHONICS FUN FRONT COVER
Why should phonics be of primary importance?

A new reader already knows the pronunciation of most of the words he or she will encounter when beginning to read and write. This is because we hear words spoken and learn to talk before we begin to read. The problem a new reader faces is how to match the printed words (symbols) on the page of a book to the pronunciation of words used in spoken language. Phonics skills help a reader to decode written words and match them to the sounds he or she already knows. Think of phonics as an additional tool in the English language toolbox.
